About This Car

Launched in 1961, the TR4 brought sharp Michelotti lines and real-world usability to the TR line. It kept the tough ladder chassis but widened the track, adopted rack-and-pinion steering, added wind-up windows and a larger boot, and introduced synchromesh on first—turning the TR from a side-curtained throwback into a modern open sports car with clear, precise feedback. Under the bonnet sat a 2,138 cc four on twin carburettors, paired with a 4-speed manual and optional Laycock de Normanville overdrive for long-legged cruising. The innovative Surrey Top (fixed glass backlight with a removable centre panel) delivered coupe-like calm with open-air freedom, while period success at Sebring confirmed the car’s stamina under pressure. Built from 1961 to early 1965, the TR4 stands as the bridge between old-school TR toughness and later refinements. A 1962 example captures the pure, early specification—clean design, honest mechanics, and a chassis that rewards every kilometre.
